If a man wants to read good books, he must make a point avoiding bad ones; for life is short, and time and energy limited.

My Father

Three years ago, when I first went to Beijing to continue study, I felt helpless.

On day, to my surprise, I found my father standing at the dormitory gate and looking at me. In his eyes, I found the warmth and loving care of a father. The dark clouds that overshadowed my mind disappeared and I became confident.

When he left, he took out some money and gave it to me. I knew that the money must have been saved coin by coin, for it consisted of much small change. Just before he left, he suddenly found that one button in my coat was loose, and insisted sewing it for me. While sewing, he said something to me, but I could hardly hear anything for I was crying. All I could remember was the love and care in his eyes.

My Teacher

My English teacher, Miss Zhang, is the best teacher I have ever had. She not only teaches us very well, but also treats us as if we were here younger brothers and sisters.

She is strict with us in our studies. And with her help, we have made great progress in English. She is patient in her teaching. She is never tired of helping us with our work. Sometimes, she visits us at home to see how we do our homework. And she never scolds us. She only reminds us to be careful and try to correct the mistakes if we make them.

Miss Zhang is also our close friend. After class she often plays and jokes with us.

I feel lucky to have such an excellent teacher and I love her very much.

A Day at School

Our homes are far away from our school, so we all live in the school.

We get up at six in the morning and then go out to do morning exercise or run a round the track. We read English aloud for half an hour before breakfast.

The morning classes begin at eight. In class we listen to the teachers attentively and take notes carefully. Our teachers do their best to teach us well.

Lunch is at twelve. After lunch we have a rest. In the afternoon we usually have two classes. From four to five is sports time. We always take an active part in sports.

We have supper at half past five. After supper we often go out for a walk. Sometimes we read newspapers or listen to tape recordings. Evening studies are from half past seven to nine. At about ten we go to bed.

My Education

I started primary school when I was six years old. There I learned reading, writing and simple maths. At the age of twelve, I entered junior secondary school. I learned Chinese, maths, history, geography and English. When I was fifteen, I sat the entrance examination for senior secondary school. While I was waiting for the result, I felt very worried. As I passed the examination, I was given my first bicycle. I had to cycle five kilometres to school every morning. During the period of senior secondary school I worked very hard because I would go up to college. However, senior secondary school meant not only hard work. At the weekend I was able to have time off to play football and table tennis.

A Pleasant Memory of My Childhood

I am eighteen years old now, but the recollection of the fun and amusement is like a sweet dream.

One Sunday, our family went to climb the beautiful Shushan Hill. My father told my elder sister and me that the first one to get to the top would be given a toy. We jumped with joy. We started to run up. At first I took the lead. A few minutes later I was breathless and my sister was ahead of me. The soft masses of the waving grass, and the drowsy, balmy air all sent their warm invitation for me to rest. But I followed my thirst for the toy and continued climbing. At last I reached the top first.

There we enjoyed the fascinating view and had a picnic. At about two o clock we danced our way down the hill with joy in our hearts, and I felt happier than the others because I got a toy train.

作者在文中使用了不同的修辞手段:拟人用了“The soft masses of waving grass, and drowsy, balmy air all sent their invitation for me to rest.”

A Spring Outing

Last Thursday we went to Changshan for our spring outing. We reached the foot to the hill at 9 am. After having a short rest, we began to climb. There was no road but stones and bushes. We had to make a way by ourselves.

With the help of the grass, we moved on. While walking, the strong students helped the weak ones. After some time, we were all tired. How we want to have a rest, but we couldn t stop, we walked on. At last, we got to the top of the hill.

On the top of the hill, we laughed and jumped. It seemed that we were the happiest people in the world. We took some photos there, and then sat down and had something to eat.

At 3 pm we began to go down. We wished the spring of our country would be with us forever.

Sunshine Boy

Look at the boy in the photo. He has big bright eyes, a mouth neither big nor small, and short black hair. Who s he?He is Li Bing. He is very humorous and handsome. He sits next to me, and he is my good friend. Looking at the photo, I remember something interesting about him.

One day, I went to school with a friend. Suddenly, Li Bing ran towards me. There was a smile on his face.

“Good afternoon, Baby!”(He always calls me like this. )“Good afternoon, ABing!”After exchanging a few words, I went on my way.

A few minutes later, I was in my seat, but he wasn t there. So I took a look at my watch, “Oh, my God!He has only one minute left!”I was worried about him. Suddenly, he appeared at the door, with a basketball in his hand. Oh, I remembered! There was a PE class that afternoon. He plays basketball very well, of course he wouldn t miss it. I looked at him, his hair was wet from sweat, but there was a complacent expression on his face. It looked very funny.

Our first class was Chinese. Although the Chinese teacher made his class lively and interesting, Li Bing looked out of the windows every now and then where a few boys were playing on the sports ground;surely his heart was with them at that time. “Li Bing, would you please tell me what s the meaning of the word ‘ran ?”the teacher asked, aware that he wasn t listening carefully. I whispered to him at once, “Turn to page 130.”After a few seconds, he said slowly, “I think it has five meanings,”Then he listed all of them. The teacher was pleased and left him sit down, “Thank goodness!”We considered him to be lucky.

Usually, Li Bing is earnest in class, except when we have PE. But once he begins to study, nothing can affect him. And he has a good memory. As a result, although he is often seen playing on the sports field, he can still get good marks. So we all think highly of him.

I m not good at maths, while he does well in it. So naturally, he becomes“my teacher”. After class one day, I was doing a maths exercise. Although I spent a lot of time on it, I still couldn t work it out. “Can I help you?”he asked me. “What?”I said. “Let me—your teacher—help you,”he said. Then he put his books on the desk and began to help me. At first, I couldn t follow him. Then he explained in great detail, patiently repeating over and over again until I understood completely. I felt great full. But before I could say“Thank you”, he said, “Not at all”, and made a face, I didn t know whether to laugh or not. Dammit. What can you do with a guy like that!

I look at his smile in the photo, I smile too.

My Father

My father is a teacher. He is a good teacher. He is more than fifty years old now. The year before last, the Department of Education gave him a medal for having completed thirty years of teaching. Now he is still teaching in a primary school.

When I was studying in the primary school where he was teaching, I was one of his pupils. So he was my father and teacher. But I could not call him“Dad”in school. He said:“In the school, you are one of my pupils, just as the others.”He always said to us pupils:“You should study hard and be a good student. I do not want you to promise me just with words that you ll be good. I want you to prove it to me with what you do. I want to be proud of you.”He was always very strict with me. If I did something wrong, he would punish me. So I had to do everything carefully. But sometimes, he would be very happy, like a child. For example, when I managed to repair the pump by meself, or when I got the first prize in the mathematics competition, he said, “I am proud of you, my daughter!”

My father is fond of music. He can play several kinds of musical instruments. In his spare time, he often sits in an old arm chair and listens to his favourite music , which is so enjoyable. Affected by this, I became interested in music, too.

My father always takes good care of me and his pupils. I still remember this very well:One day when I was already in Senior Grade Two, I went to my father s office. After talking about something to each other, my father went to a closet and after a moment brought out a package. He drew out a piece of paper and gave it to me. It was marked with my name and with the month and the year. It was one of my own copybook exercises. My father thus kept a record of all his old pupils. He read the exercises again and tears seemed to come to his eyes. Moved by what he had said and done, I made up my mind to do my work well.

I have a good father whom I am proud of and whom I love deeply.

My Idol

Today I want to talk about a person whose name is Krassimir Balakov. He is my idol. I think he is the best football player in the world and a great person.

On March 29, 1966, Krassimir Balakov was born in Bulgaria. His first successful performance was in the 1994 World Cup, when Bulgraia beat Germany and rushed into the semifinals for the first time. That was when I heard of the name Balakov, who was No. 20 on the team.

After the World Cup, Balakov went to Germany and joined the VFB Stuttgart football club. He soon became the leader of the team and his number was no longer 20 but 10. I began to pay attention to him and his club when the 1996—1997 football season began. I should never forget the first match I watched of Balakov which was between Stuttgart and Bremen. The whole match was controlled by him. He played so well that when he got the ball, no one was able to take it away from him. He shot a wonderful goal by a free kick and Stuttgart won 2∶1.

Since then, a glorious season began for Stuttgart. Other teams usually felt nervous in the thought that their next match would be played against Stuttgart for the latter could kick as many goals as they wanted. In all the 34 matches, they scored 78 goals. That may be a record which will never be broken.

I found at that time I had become a fan of Balakov. At the end of the season, I decided to write a letter to him. So I did. And after about three weeks, I received his letter and some photos. How happy I was!

But God would makes a fool of me. Four days after I received the letter, in an important match between Stuttgart and Bayer Munich which was to decide who would be the champion, Balakov was fouled off the field only 18 minutes after the match began. There went the champion too. At that time, my eyes were filled with tears. A glorious era had ended.

Two weeks ago, Stuttgart beat their biggest enemy Bayer Munich in the league match. Balakov scored another wonderful goal with a free kick, just like the first goal I saw him kick four years ago. Yes, eight years have passed since 1996, the beginning of the glorious era, and Balakov is eight years older. But he will always be my Krassimir Balakov. No matter how much time will pass, how old he will be, where he will go or even whether I should ever meet him in my life, I will never forget him, the greatest person, my idol Krassimir Balakov.

本文能比较自如地采用一些英语习惯用语,如“But God would make a fool of me...”,可见作者有较好的英文写作功底。

The Clever Donkey Tender

My dear friend, yesterday I saw an interesting caricature. I want to share it with you. I hope you will enjoy it and can learn something from it. I am sure you will love it. Now, listen carefully.

Once upon a time, in a little village, there was a young man who was interested in playing chess. He played so well that no one in his village could match him. Day by day, he became more and more confident. At last, he was conceited enough to think of himself as the best player. He told himself that a person as great as he shouldn t play readily with those secondrate players. So he set up a board with these words written on it in black:CHESS WORLD, ONLY MAN. Under that were some details:Whoever wants to play chess with me must bring along 5 taels of silver. If he loses, the silver will be mine. If he wins, I will pay him 20 taels.

Many people came to take the challenge, attracted by the 20 taels of silver. But unfortunately they all lost their 5 taels. The young player was really skillful. He even defeated the opponents from neighboring villages. Day after day, no one dared venture to play against him. Now the belief that he was the best player was strengthened. He was so proud that he looked down upon all other chess players.

One day, an old man came to visit with a thin donkey following behind. No sooner had he finished his words than the young man pointed to the board, “I am glad to have you as an opponent. But do you know the rules here?”“Yes, I know. But I must say sorry, I have no cash. Look at my donkey. Isn t it worth 5 taels?”“Hm, OK, Come on.”Being confident of winning, the young man said no more.

They played. A short while later, the young man won. The old man left without a word, leaving his thin donkey behind.

Several days later, the old man came again. The young man laughed, “Old fellow, what do you want to leave with me this time”?“Silver, if you win.”The old fellow took out 15 taels. With a kind smile on his face, he said“Three games, please.”

This time, the young man lost all the three games.

“I d lost. You will have 60 taels,”said the young man, depressed and puzzled.

“Take back your silver. I only want my donkey back,”replied the old man.

When the young player led the donkey out, the old man was pleased to see what a much fatter one his donkey had become. “Old pal, you are in good shape now, you must have led a happy life here.”Smiling, the old man went off with his donkey following behind.

“Wait, old fel—sir. I cannot understand why you were so ordinary a player last time but so excellent now,”the young man asked hesitantly.

“Oh, that s easy to understand. You know, I am a merchant, and these days I am very busy. I needed someone to tend my donkey. It is the notice that told me you were the right person,”the old man pointed to the board as he said so.

作者能够正确地运用“he was conceited enough to...”,“no one dared venture to...”, “No sooner...than...”

My Terrible Day

Poor me!I had a terrible day. Everything went wrong. Firstly, my alarm clock didn t go off so I woke up an hour late. Secondly, I was in such a hurry that I forgot to wear socks. Thirdly, I ran out of the house to try to catch the 7:30 bus. But of course I missed it. I was very worried because my teacher would get angry if any one was late for class. I decided to take a taxi, but then I realized that I didn t have enough money. Finally, I walked three miles to my classroom only to find that it was Sunday.

My Mean Grandfather

When I was five, my uncle and aunt bought many gifts for me, while my grandfather said, “It s a waste of money to buy so many things for such a little boy.”How mean my grandfather was!

Several years ago, there happened an accident.

The ceiling of my house fell down and broke the TV set. All of us were very sad. A few days later, Grandfather came. He said, “Don t worry.”Then he took out 2 000 yuan and passed it to my father. “It is the money that Mingming s uncle and aunt have collected. It is necessary for you.”Later I learned that half of the money was saved by my grandfather. I came to realize why my grandfather was mean. Now, I want to be a mean man like my grandfather.

Mum Was Crying

Mum was crying, and her eyes were full of tears.

When I got up yesterday morning, I didn t feel very well. And something was wrong with my eyes. I have also got a bad stomachache. After a while, I lost consciousness.

When I woke up, I felt a drop of tear fall on my lips. I opened my eyes and found I was in my mother s arms. “What s wrong with you, mum?Why are you crying?”I asked. “Oh, dear! You re awake at last.”Then a doctor came in. He examined me carefully. “Take it easy. She has got a bad cold. Take some medicine, and she will be OK,”he said. Hearing these words, Mum smiled.

My Lovely Nephew

My nephew, fat and white, looks like an angel. He is only twelve months old. He is so lovely that we all love him.

My sister brings him to our family once a week. At the moment we do nothing but serve him. Indeed my little nephew has brought us great pleasure.

He is growing fast. Now he can walk with the help of us. But soon it seems that he is tired of being supported. He started to stumble along by himself. I remember one day when he pronounced the sound“mama”for the first time. How happy we were!

This was the very sound that his mother had been waiting for.

另外,文中有作者的自我感受,如第二段最后一句“Indeed my little nephew has brought us great pleasure.”和第三段倒数第三句“How happy we were!”

A Classmate I Felt Sorry For

Li Hua was my classmate in the primary school. I didn t know why I disliked her very much. One day on my way home she caught up with me and said, “Xiaomin, our teacher wants you back for a while.”I did not believe her and said, “Don t make trouble for me!”Next day when I got to school, our teacher Miss Liu asked me, “Why didn t you come back yesterday?”I told a lie, “I didn t know you wanted me.”Miss liu sent for the girl and asked her. Li answered, “I m sorry, Miss Liu, but I couldn t catch up with him.”I was surprised. I suddenly realized how pretty she was. I have felt guilty for this ever since.

Thank you, Miss Zhan

One morning, I found a love letter lying on my desk. I was struck dumb with fear at that moment.

I was deep in thought. Suddenly I thought of my class teacher. She often said to us, “I ll be a friend of yours. If you have any trouble, I ll do my best to help you.”Yes, she was then the only person who could understand me.

At noon, I gave the letter to my teacher and asked her for advice. She promised not only to help me in the class meeting of that day, but also to keep the secret for me.

In the class meeting, the teacher asked the monitor to read an article which said that the middle school students were forbidden to be in love. After class, on my way home, our monitor appeared in front of me and said, “I m sorry. It s me who has written the letter.”

Oh! My teacher had recognized his handwriting and made a clever arrangement. I said to myself, “Thank you, my teacher!”

Teacher s Pointer

When the new maths teacher came into the classroom, he brought a teacher s pointer in his hand.

Upon seeing the pointer, I seemed to hear the noisy sound made by the beating of the pointer on the blackboard. The former maths teacher had a pointer too. She always beat it on the blackboard when she shouted at us. In just one term, she broke three pointers.

I thought the new teacher s pointer would not be used long. But unexpectedly the new teacher never beat it on the blackboard. On the contrary , pointing the maths problems with the pointer, he explained them very patiently to us. After his explanation, the maths problems become easy to understand.

Two Different Meals

The best thing in the world is to play after an exam. I think all of the students agree with me. And the most important thing is we can have some good meals without worry about lessons, homework and marks.

Today, I spent all morning playing basketball. When we were too tired to jump or run, we decided to have a good lunch.

We got in a “noodle restaurant”. It s not big but clean, and the most important thing was the low price. When the boys saw the price, they knew this time they could say, “It s my treat.”Like a gentleman.

The restaurant was small, but very warm. There were so many people that some of us spent a long time finding seats. The others stood in a long queue to buy the food. Then we sat around and enjoyed the delicious noodles. While eating, we talked happily. Through the window, we could see the heavy cook handpulling the noodles. I thought it s difficult to learn, but it must be interesting.

In the evening, I had dinner with my brother in a westernstyled restaurant. That s quite a different experience.

The restaurant was welldecorated outside. There were a lot of square tables covered with beautiful tablecloths. A goodlooking girl stood at the door. When we walked towards the door, she opened it and said“Welcome”with a smile on her face. After we went in, I found it clean, tidy and comfortable. My brother found a table which is in the centre of the room. After we sat down, a waiter took away the flowers which on our table, then gave us a menu.

Everything was ready soon. It s time for us to enjoy the meal. First, we must put the table napkins on our knees. Then, cut the big piece of beef into small ones with knife and fork. The whole room was very quiet. Lots of foreigners were having their dinners there, too. They spoke to each other in a low voice. All the while, we could hear beautiful soft music.

When we paid the bill, I thought to myself, “It really is different. With this same amount of money, I could have ten bowls of noodles.”

Swimming in Winter

One day during the winter holiday, after a long and tiring examination, some friends and I were chatting about winter swimming. We talked a great deal about the topic. Suddenly I had an idea. “Wouldn t it be fun and exciting if we went swimming?Others, especially some old people in our town, go swimming in winter, why can t we?What s more, winter swimming could do us a lot of good.”I told them my idea, they all agreed with me heartily. So we had a good discussion about the swim and got wellprepared for it.

The next afternoon, we biked to the riverbank where we often went fishing. Though the sky clear and the sun was shining, it was still cold and it needed courage to swim in the cold water. We began to regret our decision and thought that we should go home, but none was willing to speak out, because we didn t want to be cowards and we knew we shouldn t be discouraged. So together we quickly took off our warm winter clothes.

But things did not go so smoothly as we had expected. The freezing wind made us shiver from head to toe. At last we decided to jump into the water. First we did a lot of exercises on the bank to warm up. Then I put one foot in the water to see how cold it was. I made a funny face at my friends. The water was unbelievably cold. Then I suggested that we had better jump in all together. Without any hesitation , we jumped into the water bravely. That feeling I had when I was in the water I shall never forget. We were all up immediately and rushed back to the bank. We put on our clothes as quickly as we could and went home, sneezing all the way.

For the following days, we all suffered from a cold and were coughing day and night. We had to lie in bed. But we gained one thing from this unforgettable and interesting experience:We now know how particularly important it is for us students to build up our bodies.

有些句子,如“none was willing to speak out”,“I put one foot in the water to see how cold it was. I made a funny face at my friends. The water was unbelievably cold.”还有“That feeling I had...I shall never forget”,用得恰到好处,符合英语的习惯用法。

The Fight with the Crabs

Some animals look very interesting and lively. But if you make them angry, they will fight with you. That s the case with the crabs.

It was several years ago, when I was twelve. During a holiday, Father brought back a bag of crabs from market Lake. He said he would cook them for my brothers and me. Oh!The crabs looked so lively. They must be delicious. But my two little brothers couldn t wait to play with them. So they took them out of the big bag. Oh!My God!All of them got out, and ran so fast that I couldn t catch them. Some of them crawled under the cupboards, others went out of the room into the garden and two of them hid among the stones. The old people were all frightened, but my brother said I jumped up, looking very excited. But we had to find all of them before dinner—they must be on our dinner table that evening. So a fight between men and crabs began.

We found all kinds of tools to catch the crabs. For example, sticks, nets and so on. The crabs in the room were caught with nets easily. But the two big ones in the garden were difficult to catch. We used the sticks to drive them out of the holes, but they were indomitable. They used their big pincers to resist. Little brother was so angry that he pushed the stick into the hole. “ka...ka...”The two big crabs scrambled out, leaving two legs behind. We were successful. In the evening, we had a wonderful dinner. But after two days, trouble came. A strange smell came from the cupboard. Oh!Two crabs had died in the cupboard. How could they have gotten into the cupboard?Nobody knows.

A Bird s Story

Kevin was a little bird. He lived happily with his mother, sisters and brothers in a big tree by the side of Dream Lake. Every morning they flew out and played in the sky. “Mum”asked Kevin, “is everywhere as beautiful as here?”“I think so. You have three aunts. Aunt King lives beside the vast blue sea. She has many friends living in the sea. The sand is golden and soft. Aunt White lives in the north. It s cold there. But there s lovely white snow. When it snows heavily, the trees and the ground are all clothed in white. Aunt Green lives in a big forest. There are lots of trees, so many that you can t count them all. There, the birds sing all day long. Hares, deer and many other friends live happily together. But they must stay away from the tigers and some other animals. “Really?May I go to see my aunts?” “Not now, dear. Some day when you grow up.”

How time flied!Kevin was a big boy then. “You are big enough, my dear,”said mother. “You may now travel by yourself. But be careful,”“I can take care of myself. Do not worry, Mum. And I ll remember everything you have told me since I was little. Take care, Mum. Bye.”Mother Bird watched Kevin until he disappeared in the sky. “Good luck. Kev!”

Kevin went to Aunt King. But to his surprise, he couldn t see any blue sea and golden sand. “Mum, you cheated me!Where is everything?”Then Kevin heard a low voice. “Kev, you are Kev?”He looked around and sees an old bird lying on the sand. “Kev, I m Aunt King. Your mother told me to look after you but I m sorry I can t. See the water? That is the sea. But it isn t blue and beautiful any more. People throw dirty things, we don t know what, into the sea. Now black and smells terrible. And so is the sand. Don t stay here, dear, it s bad for you. Go, quickly.”She then died. Kevin was afraid and sad. But he couldn t do anything. He left quickly. From the sky he looked down, but saw just a few dead fishes in the sea. “This is the last time I come to the sea. but I m not afraid, because I m a big boy.”

Then he went to Aunt White, but there s too much smoke in the sky. He couldn t get close enough to see. “I still have one hope. I m going to the big forest.”He flew to the big forest. “There are the trees!I ve found them. But why are they so short?”He flew closer and found that they had all been cut down. “What s wrong?Where are my friends?Where are the dangerous animals?”“The small animals are all dead. The big ones have been sent to the zoos,”said an old tree trunk. “My child, my poor child. Everything is gone.”“I can t believe it. You are all lying!”Kevin shouts. “I m going home. I miss you, Mum.”He was very tired but he still flew fast. “I m going home. I m going back to Dream Lake.”

At last he reached home. “Is this my home?”he asks. “Yes,”said a voice from behind. “Who are you?”“I m your brother, Bob.”“Bob?Tell me, why is everything like this!”“Get down here, Kev. Mother knew people would come here even before you left. You are the youngest but also the most unhealthy. She s afraid you would get ill because of the pollution, so she made you go. But unexpectedly. We all failed to escape, Mother has died.”Kevin couldn t help weeping. “The humans will be punished but that s not what we want. Just give us back our home. Please. Bob, we ll go on living, won t we?I know there s hope.”

“A Bird s Story”(《

MidAutumn Festival

MidAutumn Festival is one of the most important festivals in China. It is celebrated on the night of the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar year. The time is in the middle of autumn, so it called MidAutumn Festival.

It is a time for reunion and for farmers to get in the crops. We are very, very busy and tired during these days. It gives us much pleasure in the evening to have a rest and enjoy many exciting things.

The great significance of this festival is family reunion. For thousands of years, we Chinese value the day much. We think it even more important than the Spring Festival. No matter how far people travel, they will try by every means to get back, because it is a family reunion festival.

When all the members of the family get together, we begin to prepare all kinds of foods. Although it is the busy season, the feast is the most important. When the time for dinner finally comes, we children can not resist helping ourselves to those delicious dishes. But we must not touch the mooncakes. They are only served when the moon comes out.

At last, the longawaited moon appears! It is the most exciting moment. As we enjoy the glorious full moon, we begin to taste the mooncakes. In fact, enjoying the moon is the grownups business. We children only care for the tasty mooncakes.

Then, sitting around the table, we members of the family will talk intimately. There are many beautiful stories about the MidAutumn Festival. They are as interesting as the mooncakes. But we can t stay up too late. We must be sure to have enough sleep. You know, it is not only a reunion festival but also a harvest festival. The next day, we ll be busy in the fields again.

文章最后提到 it is not only a reunion festival but also a harvest festival 眼光独到。

Visiting the Great Wall

There is a famous saying:“He who doesn t reach the Great Wall is not a true man.”This morning my father and I got up early to visit the Great Wall. We went there by car.

On our way to the Great Wall, we saw many tall buildings on both sides of the road.

About two hours drive brought us to the Great Wall. When the Great Wall appeared in front of us, we couldn t help crying, “What a wonderful sight it is!”When we walked on the Great Wall we felt very proud because it s the longest wall in the world. Today it has become a place of interest to the people all over the world.

After visiting the Great Wall, I ve made up my mind to study harder than ever.

My Busiest Sunday

Last Sunday we had no class. I thought I could have a good sleep. But my mother woke me up early and asked me to help her with the housework. After a quick breakfast, first I washed my clothes. Then I sat down to do my homework. But hardly had I opened my book when my mother asked me to clean the house. When I finished it, it was time for lunch. After lunch I had no time to take a rest. I began to do my homework immediately.

文章通过一系列的细节描写来突出繁忙,如 after a quick breakfast, first..., then..., hardly had...when..., immediately等,字里行间无不渗透一个“忙”字。

The “Lost”Money

“What s that?”Just as she walked out of the dormitory, she caught sight of something on the ground.

“Oh, money!”

She rushed for the money with her eyes wide open, and stepped on it. She looked around. “God bless me!There is nobody but me.”She picked up the money and put it into her pocket by pretending to tie her shoes. Then she hurried back into the dormitory with her face hot and red.

Having closed the door, she began to count the money.

“One yuan, two yuan…Ah, sixty yuan!”Her heart beat very fast.

She thought, “With it,”she thought aloud. “I can buy a new suit. Let those girls who care for dressing envy me. I would look splendid in my new clothes.”

The whole morning she learned nothing about her lessons.

The afternoon saw her walking into the classroom, dressed in new clothes. She looked like a beautiful actress. Dozens of eyes were fixed upon her. She felt on top of the world.

A few days passed, but she didn t hear of anyone looking for the money. So she looked at herself in the mirror even more joyfully.

One night she began to count her “possessions”.

“Oh, my dear!Where is my sixty yuan—the money I have to live on for two weeks?”

“Oh, the money!My sixty yuan!”

(1)rushed for 生动地写出了 she 的心态。

(2)with one s eyes/mouth wide open

(4)The afternoon saw her...

(5)习惯用 dozens of 表达“几十”,tens 用在 tens of thousands of 词组中。

(6)on top of the world 是固定词组,top 前不加 the。

(7)hear sb. doing sth. 是真的能“听”到,如 hear him singing, hear her knocking at the door, “听说某人干某事”,要说 hear of sb. doing sth. 。

An Unforgettable Experience

Last summer holiday, my mother and I went to seashore for a visit.

One morning, I walked along the beach alone. Suddenly, I found a little girl in a shabby shirt following me. Then I stopped my feet, and she stopped too, looking at me. Soon, she came over, and stood right in front of me. She held out her right hand and opened her palm—there was a beautiful pearl necklace. I liked it, but I remembered my mother had already bought several such necklaces for me, so I said to her, “I m sorry, I won t buy it, because I have already bought one of this kind.”

That little girl looked at my eyes and said pitifully, “This one is for you. I only need some money to buy a pencil.”When I heard this, I didn t know what to say. I searched in my bag, and tried to find some money. I wanted to give it to the girl if I could find some. It s a pity I couldn t find any money, but only a piece of bread. I gave it to the poor girl, and she wolfed it down.

After she ate it up, she was ready to leave. But she put the necklace into my hand before she went away quickly. I held the necklace and looked at the little back of the little girl disappearing in the distance. I was very sorry I couldn t do anything to help her. But I hope she can have a pencil for herself soon.

Happy New Year, My Teacher

It was time for lunch. I hurried out of the classroom and ran into the diningroom. The diningroom was big, but it was already full of teachers and students and, of course, much noise, too.

I was standing in the line for dishes when the foreign teacher of English came in and stood just behind me and talked with another teacher. At lunch time I always saw her. She was slim and beautiful and smiled kindly, with books in her hand. She didn t teach my class. But I supposed that she would teach us soon. Christmas was over and the new year was drawing near. I must say hello to her, I thought, for I respected her very much and I had never talked to a foreigner, especially a teacher of English. The chance came at last. No sooner had she finished talking with the teacher than I turned around. “Excuse me?”I said, not very loudly but clearly. “Yes?”She answered, looking at me, puzzled. “Happy new year to you!”I raised my voice. “Thank you very much,”she said quickly. Then I had a short talk with her and I learned she didn t like steamed bread but enjoyed baked bread. Encouraged by her, I talked more easily than before. I also learned she was married and still had no child and her husband had returned to the United Sates. “I m sorry to hear that,”I said to her, “Happy new year to your husband, too. Thank you very, very much for your hard work here at our school.”She understood and smiled happily. I wished her not to feel lonely, though she was alone.

I wish all the foreigners in China to have a happy new year.

的”,如:help a wouldbe football player to improve his technique 帮助一个想要成为足球运动员的人提高技术。

(3)be drawing near 更符合英语表达法,如果此处用 be coming nearer and nearer 有中国式英语之嫌。

(5)在“某人说”这类的引出直接引语的结构中,如某人是名词(the teacher), 那么 the teacher said 或 said the teacher 均可,但如果某人是代词(he), 一般用 he said 较好。

请体会下列句子 :One may fell lonely even if he lives in a big city.

One who is alone but good at enjoying himself may not feel lonely at all.

Experience as a Shopassistant for Foreigners

A few years ago, when I was a pupil, my teacher gave me a chance to go to the Children s Palace to be a shopassistant serving the foreign friends from the USA, Britain, Japan and other countries. I thought it was a very good chance for me to practise English, so I accepted it.

The teachers of the Children s Palace asked me to work there every Tuesday afternoon.

Once, an old American lady with her little granddaughter came to my counter and asked for some handicraft articles. It was difficult to talk with the old lady without an interpreter. I tried to make myself understood with the little English I had learnt in my English lessons. Finally I understood that she wanted to buy her granddaughter a special present. There were some little woolen chicks, some pencil sharpeners, and souvenir badges. But I did not think they were special. Suddenly I saw an elegant golden abacus. The abacus is the earliest calculator in the world, and it was invented by the Chinese people. I thought the abacus was a special thing the lady might want. Then I put it on the counter. I poked one of the small golden balls on the abacus, and said, “one,”I poked another, “two,”...At last when I counted up to ten, the little girl cried, “It s interesting!Granny, I want it,”The old lady bought the abacus with a smile.

The little girl was very happy. So was I. I did my first, and a special, business in my life.

(2)this, that, last, next, every 如:every day, this afternoon, next week 等。

Where Are You from?

I had an amusing experience last summer, when I went to Beijing on holiday.

One day, I went to the Summer Palace. On the way, I came across a foreigner. She was very beautiful with a pair of dark glasses and long fair hair. I had longed to talk with a foreigner. This time, I thought I had a chance. So I went up to her and said in English, “Excuse me, may...may I talk with you?”“Certainly,”said the foreigner with a smile. I was so excited that I didn t know what to say. “What s your name?”She asked. “Wang Huifang,”I answered. “Well...well.. may I ask you some questions?”I added. “Please,”she said.

“What are you?”“A college student.”“Can you tell me how to learn spoken English?”“Oh, sorry. I don t know how to explain it. But I can tell you a book about spoken English.”“......”

We talked happily for a few minutes. I felt very happy, because I could understand what she said. And I felt my spoken English was good enough. At last, I asked her, “Where are you from?”“China,”she said in Chinese with a smile, and then took off her dark glasses.

I was astonished.

“I am a Chinese like you. And I will take part in a play in English,”she said in Chinese. “I am well made up, ain t I?”“Yes.”The girl did look like a foreigner, I thought.

Though I felt a little disappointed that she was not a real foreigner, I was happy for having got a good chance to practise my spoken English.

Where Are Your from?”

Taking Photos

I spent a very instructive weekend, I should say. Zhang Weijing and I went to the Park to practise taking photos. We are both the members of the photography group. To take some photos is not a difficult job, but if you want to take some good or artistic ones, it is much more difficult. You must study. Of course, you can t only study the knowledge in the book, but you ought to study the skill in practice. You must ought to study the skill in practice. You must pay attention to the distance, diaphragm and exposure when you are taking photos. How to find a good view to form a good picture may be the most important. I am just a learner. In the past, I did not like to take photos very much, but as soon as I took the camera, I was attracted by it. My father likes taking photos too. He is not a professional cameraman, but he is good at taking photos. I became his model when I was only 56 days old! Now, there are two photography fans in my family.

In the park, I asked so many people to take photos for them. One of them was a gardener. He was in his dirty clothes with mud on his face, but he looked quite honest and kind. I took a photo of him when he was working. The others were lovely children playing happily. Their parents thanked me for taking pictures of them. I felt a little proud.

I like taking photos. It can keep the wonderful views or exciting moments for ever. When I am old, I will look at these photos again. They will remind me of the things that have passed. I hope everyone will enjoy taking photos.

此处不能用 velocity, velocity 是指 rate of movement。

A Happy Spring Festival

Of all our holidays the Spring Festival is the most important to us Chinese. Everyone gets about one week off work for it. The Spring Festival is mainly a family celebration. No matter how far away from home a person is, he will always try to get home in time to gather together.

Several days before this new lunar year, my brother and I cleaned our rooms and decorated them. The old folk say that everything must be new and clean for the Spring Festival so that the new year will bring happiness and good luck.

On the 30th of the December of the lunar year, my father told me to write new year couplets. My mother was busy cooking for lunch. On the table were all kinds of dishes at noon. What an enormous and delicious dinner!I had never tasted such a nice dinner. Because of happiness, I drank with Father at dinner.

That was the first time I had ever drunk, you know. My face turned red after only one cup of wine. Then my father said, “We are living a happy life because of the wise policy of our Party.”

That night we watched the special Spring Festival programmes on TV to see the new year in. The programmes were so wonderful that we burst into laughter now and then. When the clock struck midnight, the noise of the firecrackers outside became defening. Father opened the door and said, “Let s welcome in big fortune!”

I was very excited the next morning and woke up earlier than ever. Mother and Father were making jiaozi. So I helped them with that. When several bowls of jiaozi were ready and put on the table, my father lit the incense on the table. Then my brother tied some firecracers to a pole and went outside. I picked up a stick which was still burning in the stove to light them. With loud bangs the firecrackers went off. With loud bangs we greeted the first day of the new lunar year.

What a happy Spring Festival I had!

We hoped that the loud bangs would drive away everything unpleasant in the past and bring us greater happiness and luck in the new year.

be busy with 后接名词,而“be busy+动名词”时,动名词前不用介词with。

(2)I had never tasted...不能写成现在完成式或I have never tasted...。

That was the first time I had ever drunk.

Chicks

Two months ago Mother bought fifteen chicks for one yuan. These little fellows were really lovely.

Unfortunately, eight of the chicks went to the other world one by one. At last only seven were left. One day when they were taking a walk in the sun on our balcony, one fell downstairs. I was in deep sorrow for several days. It was my fault not to take good care of them.

The remaining chicks were growing up with each passing day. It was very funny to watch them eating. When I dropped some food they would rush to it, though some of them were not firm on their feet. They ran so fast that sometimes they fell, but they would quickly pick themselves up and joined in the fighting for the food again.

One warm afternoon when I was back from school I found Mother s eyes red. Then I was told that five chicks had died while trying to swim in the water. I stood there dumbfounded. “Damn!I should have taught you how to swim since you liked swimming,”I said to myself.

Now there s only one chick left and I have given him an English name, Alger, and take greater care of it. He s quite naughty. After I gave him some meat to eat he refused to have rice any more. I think this is something like us human beings. Sometimes he even jumps onto the chair to have a meal with us.

Once I turned on the radio and Alger stood by as if he were enjoying the music. After a while he walked away. It seemed that he wasn t satisfied with the music. Now Alger has grown up and I regard him as one of the five members of my family, that is, my father, my mother, my brother, Alger and me.

所以,pick themselves up 不能写作 climb up。

An Unforgettable Classmate

In Grade One, I knew Honglin, who left a deep impression on me. Now, I still often think of him.

At school, Honglin was always wearing thicker clothes. He never had classes of PE and he seldom laughed. But he was very friendly to everyone. He always did exceedingly well in his studies. However hard we tried, no one could catch up with him. At a parents meeting, his mother said, “My son s achievements depend on his efforts. He spends at least fourteen hours on study every day. He is having a race with time.”

Soon, I came to know the story of Honglin. He had a serious heart disease. A year before he went to middle school, he had got an imported cardiopacemaker implanted in his body. This cost his family 100 000 yuan, so his family became much poorer. As to be a university student was Honglin s only wish, his three sisters had to discontinue their studies to help their brother realize his wish. Having heard this story, I suddenly understood why Honglin studied so hard—he wanted to repay his family with his hard work.

Unfortunately, just in that year, in that cold winter, he caught a cold which caused heart trouble again. He was sent to hospital immediately. At night, he was suddenly very excited, so he took out a book to read and said to his parents:“Tomorrow, I will return to school.”But a few minutes later, his face suddenly turned black and he became short of breath. At the moment he seemed to realize that death was coming. He grasped his parents hands:“Dad, Mum, I can t realize my wish. How I envy my classmates, because they have a chance to go to school, while I don t have a chance any longer...”

Now Honglin has been dead for four years, but his image has been engraved on my memory. And his words “I don t have a chance any longer”will make me value more my chance of learning and study harder.

Dost thou love life? Then do not squander times;for that s the stuff life is made of.

(1)come to know 表示“开始了解”。

As to be a university...

Longman 词典对 admire 的解释是“regard...with pleasure and respect”或“look at with pleasure”。 envy (或 be envious)与 be jealous 不同,后者有贬义,而 envy 没有。

Mother, Let Me Help you

The shop in which my mother used to work was shut down one year ago. A lot of workers had to leave their work including my mother. Several months had passed but most of the unemployed workers still didn t get new jobs although the local government tried its best. So Mother decided to find a job by herself. After making a great effort, she got a job as a street cleaner, responsible for keeping clean a part of street about 200 metres long. Although the pay was low, the work conditions were bad, Mother said she was glad to do this work. But I thought people would look down upon us.

Today I am free at home. In the morning, Mother asked me if I could help her with the cleaning work in the street. At first I wanted to say:“I m afraid I can t because I have some homework to do today,”as I was afraid of being recognized by my classmates, but when I saw the white hairs on Mother s head, I said instead, “Oh, yes, I ll go with you, Mum.”After breakfast, we went to the street. I pushed a cart for collecting rubbish, holding my head down and not daring to see the people walking in the street. I always felt that someone was looking at me, laughing at me...

“Hello, Afang.”Oh, dear. It was Mr Chen, who taught us Chinese. “Mr Chen, I, I...”I didn t know what to say. My face turned red. “Oh, don t be so shy. You are a hardworking girl. The street cleaners are important and honorable. We should thank you and your mother. Your classmates should learn from you. Good girl, don t look down upon yourself, hold your head high, Bye!”

Then I realized that I was honorable as a daughter of a street cleaner. I should held my head high. After finishing the hard work and then looking at the tidy street, I felt that Mother and I were the most honorable people in the world. Mother, I ll help you whenever I am free.

I m afraid I can t because... I m afraid I can t for...

(3)Your是相对“我”而言,如果 Your classmates 用 the other classmates 代替,读起来好像“我”也是一个 classmate了,故不正确。

My Experience in Net Chatting

I used to think net chat was a waste of time and money. But all my friends told me that it was great fun, and persuaded me to have a try.

This was my first chat on the Internet. The people I talked to were my classmates, whose names were Crazy Kid and CuteBoy. I gained valuable experience that night.

Are people named like that?In fact, these are not their real names. People use nicknames on the Internet. So remember it s unnecessary to be surprised when you see a name like “Fnmtg”or “Superpool.”

On the Net Chat, almost everything is untrue. For example, name, age, sex and so on. Therefore, usually people can talk freely, for they don t have to worry about the consequences that their words may bring. So the chat subjects are wide in range, interesting, and the chatter s character as it appears on the Net is not what it actually is. I mean, a shy girl can be quite openminded and a smart boy can be obtuse on the Internet. When someone wants to tell you she is a girl, she may say, “Perhaps I am a boy.”However, not all the words on the Internet are lies. To find out which is true and which is false is also an interesting thing to do, isn t it?But you should remember one thing all the time. That is:DO NOT ASK FOR THE CHATTER S INFORMATION IN A STRAIGHT FORWARD WAY. It is not polite to do that.

Another point is that the Internet chat has its own rules. Chatters have invented some peculiar abbreviations. For example, “AFAIK”means“as far as I know,”“BTW”stands for “by the way”and “ICQ”stands for “I seek you.”They mean nothing in everyday life, but on the Internet, they can help save a lot of typing time. So now you can guess the meanings of “IC”and “VG”yourself. Then there are not only the abbreviations, but also the Efaces. An Eface is consisted of some special signs and letters. It is used to describe in a lively way your feelings to the friends you re talking with. When you want to smile, you can type“:-)”;if you have a moustache, smile like this“;-f<;)”. From left to right, the signs here refer to the eyes, nose, moustache and mouth. There is an old proverb:“Put your money where your mouth is.”Its Eface is:“:$”. The abbreviation and Eface are the basic tools for chatting on the Internet.

Finally, you should try to be a polite and creative chatter to the best of your ability. It can make you welcome and famous. Being“Polite”means you should take good care of MM(it is short for madam)and never use beastly words. Of course if you are MM, then you can only follow the second rule. Being“Creative”is an easy way to make you wellknown. When you chat, show your own character to the other with some cool words and Efaces. Sometimes you can also give several wrong answers, which are not in accordance with the questions and are difficult to understand. Then the other person may think you are a professor, and feel respect for you at once.

Well, those are the tips I have learnt. But it doesn t mean you can do well with them alone. I was once proud of my typing speed. However, when I wrote my first reply to Crazy Kid, CuteBoy s fifth message had already come. It s too hard to deal with such supertypists. So, do practise typing, and then enjoy the net chat!

One day, he was sleeping in English class. Little by little, he went off to dreamland. He dreamt that he had already grown up and was a shop assistant working in a big shop. At that moment, two Englishmen came up and spoke English to him. But he only understood a few words. He did not know what they wanted. How disappointed they were!

When he was in trouble, another shop assistant came over. He spoke English very well. With his help, the two Englishmen bought what they needed and left with a smile on their faces.

The next day, the boss in the shop fired him, for he was very poor in English.

Suddenly, the bell rang and he woke up. He thought it over and slowly his face turned red. He understood that English was very important to a shop assistant.

Ever since then, he studied English very hard. After five years, he became one of the best shop assistants in the shop for foreigners.

One day, when I was on my way home. I suddenly heard a cry behind me. I turned around and saw Wang Hai, one of my classmates, running after me. So I stopped walking on. He came up to me and said. “Hey, here s a film ticket for you. The film will be shown this evening. Remember to go to the cinema on time. GoodBye!”He ran away whistling. I was so surprised that I stood there for a long time. After all, it was the first time I was invited to see a film by a boy!Should I go or not? What on earth did he want to do?The more I thought about it, the more worried I became. At last, I decided not to go. But that evening I was nervous. I was afraid something would happen.

Friendship

In my opinion, friendship is one of the most important things in the world. Friends can help you when you are in trouble. They also can share you burdens.

I have two best friends. We have known one another from primary school. One of them is called Xin, the other, Yu. In those days, we studied and played together. But sadly, Xin had an illness. Although it wasn t serious, she couldn t do any exercise.

One day, she didn t come to school. Both of us worried about her. Once classes were over, we rushed to her home to see her. She wasn t in. Her grandmother told us that she was in hospital. Without putting down out school bags, we ran to the hospital.

The hospital room was so clean that Xin s face looked very pale. Through the window we saw her clearly. She seemed very ill. We didn t want to interrupt her sleep. I didn t know why, but tears rolled down our cheeks.

After we returned, Yu suggested, “Shall we make some paper cranes for her?” I nodded in agreement. So we bought some beautiful paper and began our work. Stars came out in the sky. Maybe they also wanted to send their regards to the poor girl. That night we didn t stop until there was no paper left. There were 96 cranes in all.

The next day we took them to her. She looked much better. I said regretfully, “I m sorry. There are only 96. We have no paper left.”Xin said nothing. Then, with a smile, she took three paper cranes which she had made out of the drawer.

This is a true story. From then on, I understood much more the meaning of friendship. Although Xin has moved to a new city and she has been all right, we still write to each other and there is always one paper crane in the envelope.

Parents Love and Money

For a long time, there was a idea in my head. That is:make money. I don t know why I had such an idea, but I really want money. It even becomes the most important thing for me.

As a child. I loved money, too. But at that time, I just wanted to spend money. Every day, I took the money my parents gave me. That was a very nice thing. But I didn t know it was earned with sweat and labour. As I grew up, I slowly came to know how hard it was to make that money. My parents worked year after year, day after day, to earn that money. I thank them very much for that.

I can never forget that day. When I woke up in the morning, I found my parents had already got up. Mother was cooking, father was out. I sat up at once and put on my clothes. Then I went to collect my things for school. Father finally came back. He seemed very tired. I suddenly found he had become much older. I was surprised. “What s the matter with father?”I thought. “Why do they look so tired today?”My parents didn t say anything. Then it was time for me to go to school. Mother took out 1 000 yuan and gave it to me. But where did this money come from?I remembered very well that father had been ill for many days and there wasn t any money in the house. Then mother told me that father had spent the whole morning borrowing money in order to let me continue studying. Now I understood. Mother and father had worried about this money for a whole night. I took the money from mother s rough and dry hands. I looked at my parents faces, and didn t know what to say. Their tired look made me feel very sorry. At that moment, I even wanted to give up school. My parents had spent a lot on me, buying everything I needed, but I can t do anything to reward them. Time flies, little by little wrinkles appear on their faces. The white hair also appears. Work has made them old. They have lost their youth. When I think of this, I get a pain in my heart. As their child, I wish I could work and get a lot of money, so that they can enjoy life. They used to want to make life happy for me. So do I now for them. But I am really too young to work. What else can I do at present, I don t know. That day at school, I saw many other parents come to pay for their children. Some of them were even much older than my parents. Who know how hard they have been working! Now I know. I should study hard, save money and reward them.

My busy parents, you have spent too much on me. I will grow up very soon. Then, I will do everything for you and never let you be worried about anything. You needn t worry about money any longer, I m sure. And the other parents too. We will have grown up by then because of your love!

A Tug of War Match

We had a tug of war match last Friday afternoon. We were very excited.

We rushed to the playground as the bell rang, there waited our opponents, students from Grade Three. They looked much stronger than us. On the ground lay a very long rope which would be used in the match. A red sign was in the middle of the rope. We picked up the rope and the match started. The students around us began to shout and cheer at the top of their voices. We also shouted as loudly as we could. The weather was hot, but the atmosphere of the match was even hotter. The red sign moved to our side sometimes and then towards the other side. It seemed that it was very hard for us to win the match. Just then our captain shouted, “Come on, friends. Let s end the match at once. Beat them.”We used all strength and the sign moved to our side nearer and nearer. With the sound of judgement s whistle, the match ended. We won at last. It was the result of our good cooperation and united spirt.

文中所运用的词组有 at the top of one s voice, use all one s strength (用尽力气),good cooperation (配合默契),united spirit (合作精神)等。

倒装句 there waited our opponents;

定语从句 rope which would be...

比较级 was even hotter;

A Special Test;

Tests and exams are very common to me, but I took an uncommon one last summer.

Last July I had a Pipa (a Chinese musical instrument) proficiency test. I had a lot of practice before the test, but when the time came, I was still very tense. My mother realized that. She touched my head tenderly,“Don t worry. I m sure you can succeed.”

Soon it was my turn. I said to myself, “You are able to pass it.”When I went into the room where the test was given, I saw three teachers sit in the front row.

I began to play the music. At first I was very nervous, so I made a mistake on the musical notes. I saw smiles on the teachers faces and calmed down. Then I continued and played better and better till I finished the whole piece smoothly. I felt so happy about it.

That test taught me that it is very important to take the first step in doing anything. I believe I will do better in the future.

A Naughty Boy

My uncle has a little son named Xiaoyang, who is eight years old now. He has bright eyes which always twinkle. In his round face is a straight nose which makes him more lovely. Everyone knows him likes him.

Xiaoyang is very clever and hardworking. He is one of the top three students in the class. Young as he is, he is good at computer. But sometimes he is so naughty that you don t know whether to laugh or to cry at what he does. Let me tell you a story, then you can see.

One day my uncle was walking along the street when he saw a small boy runing towards him very quickly. It was Xiaoyang, “Why are you running like that?”my uncle asked with anger. “I m trying to stop two boys from fighting.”he answered, after taking a deep breath. My uncle felt relieved and saw him go on running down the street very fast. That night when he came back, my uncle wanted to know who the two boys were. Do you know how he answered?“They re Xiaoyang and me.”What a naughty boy!

Look, they are looking at me.”said grandma, pointing at the people on the TV screen. On hearing this, we couldn t help laughing. Father s Love

It was raining and I dragged myself back after school. My father hadn t come back. I wondered if he had forgotten today was my 17th birthday. I missed my mother who left for Shanghai several days ago. If she were at home, she would have prepared beautiful gifts and lots of delicious dishes. But today I had to cook for father and myself a very simple meal.

Everything was ready but still father didn t appear. It was raining hard, and the drops of rain tapping on the windowpane. I felt cold and lonely.

It was nearly 9 o clock. Suddenly there was a gentle knock on the door. I rushed to open it. There stood my father with a bunch of flowers in his hand. I let him in at once and found he was wet all over. “Happy birthday, my dear daughter!”said father, putting the flowers into my hand. “I went to many shops to get these flowers as your present. Do you like it?”I held the flowers tightly to my chest and nodded.

I felt so happy that I kissed my father on his wet face.

Father s love was the best present for me. I wouldn t feel lonely any more because father was with me.

An Unforgettable Class

“Ling...”, the bell rang, and in came our teacher Mr Li. That was the last class of the morning and we felt very tired. But we all came to life when Mr. Li said, “Let s play a game together.”We looked forward to knowing what kind of game it should be.

Mr. Li said nothing then turned to the blackboard. At once a face without nose appeared on the blackboard. Zhang Yu was asked to come to the front and was blindfolded by a piece of cloth. “Please add the nose to the face.”Oh, what an interesting job!Zhang Yu thought for a while and felt her way to the blackboard. We burst into laughter when he turned round. The nose was on the forehead! How funny it looked!

Mr. Li began his speech after we all calmed down, “This is what I want to tell you in this class. Remember this:Don t do anything if you don t understand, otherwise you ll make a fool of yourself.”

What a good lesson Mr. Li gave us!

Our School

Our school, set up in the year 1917, is a wellknown middle school in our city. Now there are 36 classes, nearly 200 teachers and 2 000 students in our school.

The students in our school all work hard at their lessons, but at the same time they are taking an active part in various kinds of activities in and out of class. They help each other, learn from each other, and love each other.

The teachers are hardworking, too. In class, they try their best to make the lessons lively and interesting, while after class, they spend a lot of time with us, talking with us and even playing with us. Many of the teachers are like our dear parents, or good friends.

A classroom building and a laboratory building were set up last year on our campus, which looks magnificent and beautiful.

(1)Our school, set up in the year 1917, is a wellknown middle school in our city.

此句中间插入了过去分词短语 set up in the year 1917, 表达就显得流畅自如。

(2)Many of the teachers are like our dear parents, or good friends.

(3)A classroom building and a laboratory building were set up last year on our campus, which looks magnificent and beautiful now. A classroom building and a laboratory building,因为,它的谓语动词是 looks, 而非 look。

Mother s Day

Today is Mother s Day, a special day on which sons and daughters express love and appreciation for mothers everywhere. I am especially thankful for my mother, because she is truly special.

She is raising our family by herself. She has always worked hard for us in order to give us the best of everything. I respected and admire her very much.

On this special day I would like to buy something special and expensive for my mother to show her how much I love her, but I cannot afford to do that. Instead, I am giving her a big card and a small gift. I think she will understand how I feel about her.

I will always remember her good cooking and how dinner was waiting on the table for me every evening when I came home from school. On rainy days she would wait for me at the school door with an umbrella. One day she wasn t there. I waited and waited, but she didn t come, and I had to walk home alone in the rain. When I got home, I found that she was sick in bed. I felt sorry for her, but she felt sorry for me because I had gotten all wet. She told me to take a hot bath and change my clothes. In the middle of the night I had a fever. I had to stay home from school for a few days, and she cared for me until I was better. How important a mother is!No matter how much love I returned to her, it can never equal the mother s love.

Someday, when I m older and am making lots of money, I ll be able to take care of my mother, just as she takes care of me now. But for now, I just want my mother to know how much I love her and how grateful I am to her. I hope her health remains excellent so that she will always be here to care for me.

An English Speech Match

On Wednesday afternoon, there was an English speech match in my grade. My classmates wanted me to join it. When I stood on the big platform and looked at lots of audiences, I felt very, very nervous. “Oh, what can I do now?”I asked myself. “Why did I agree to speak in this contest?”I thought and thought, but I couldn t say anything.

“It s your turn now,”said the teacher. “Please begin.”

“OK!I will...”I answered. Then I said to the audience, “Good afternoon, everyone. Today I m going to talk about...well, I m going to talk about...about”I thought hard, but I remembered nothing.

“Ha, ha...”Many people laughed and I heard someone saying:“Look at that stupid girl. She doesn t know what she is going to talk about.”

My face turned red. I really didn t know what I was going to say. I forgot everything because I was too nervous.

After I got home, I began to cry. Father came into my room and asked,“What s the matter with you, my child.”I told him about my failure. He smiled and said, “It doesn t matter. Don t cry. Work harder next time and you ll do better. Don t you remember the saying‘Failure is the mother of success. ”

用得较好的词语和句型有:there be..., look at, agree, It be one s turn, be going to, talk about, what s the matter..., It doesn t matter.

Our School——Full of Love

On April 20, after two classes in the morning, the broadcasting station of our school went on the air. The announcer told us the sad news that a student named Tong Kai in Junior 2 needed a kidney transplant. It would cost one hundred thousand yuan. It was impossible for his family to pay so much money, but Tong Kai was critically ill, so the Student Union called on everyone to do something to help Tong Kai.

The news soon spread over the campus. Everyone was anxious about his illness. From that day on, the teachers and students began to contribute money to help him. We were not rich, but all of us were generous contributors. The teachers donated part of their salaries. Many students helped Tong Kai with their pocket money. Li Bin, a student in Junior 2, contributed eighty yuan. He said, “The money we have contributed is not enough for Tong s operation, but we have done what we can. We all hope that Tong Kai will get well soon and come back to study with us.”His simple words expressed our deep affection. In only three days the Student Union received ten thousand yuan in all.

With the help of many schoolmates, teachers and other kind people, Tong Kai got enough money and was operated on successfully. He said, “I thought I was the most unlucky person in the world, but now I think just the opposite. I live in the care and love of thousands of kind people. I ll face life bravely.”While saying these words, he couldn t keep back his tears.

What a warm big family our school is!

文章中用得不错的词语和句型有:it is impossible for, from...on, in all, with the help of, keep back, 等。

Family Fun

I have a lovely family in which I always feel happy. My parents and I have a lot of fun together in our spare time and we can even manage to turn tiresome housework into something interesting.

One evening, after we had supper we were all tired and didn t want to wash the dishes. So I thought of a good idea. “I ve got three pieces of paper here,”I said to my Dad and Mom. “I ll write down‘Yes on one piece of paper and ‘No on the other two. Whoever gets ‘Yes will wash the dishes.”Because I didn t want to wash the dishes, I wrote three “Yes”. And then I winked at Mother, who understood me at once. Each of us got one piece of paper. I said to Father, “Dad, Mom and I will see what you ve got. If you get ‘Yes , you ll wash the dishes.”Father knew my trick. Throwing his piece of paper away with a smile, he said to me. “I will see your piece first. If you get‘Yes , you ll wash the dishes.”What else could I do but taste the bitter drink which I myself had brewed?

After the Examination

Scores are undoubtedly important for students. So today when I saw the score, 96, on my Chinese test paper, my happiness was beyond words. I believed that mum would also be very happy and perhaps she would reward me.

As soon as I got home, I raised the test paper before mum and said proudly, “Mum, look at my score!”Out of my expectation, Mum said calmly, “Good, but I hope you can find out the reason why four points were taken away.”Hearing the words, I stood in amazement at first. Then I understood Mum s words and nodded with all my strength.

Then I understood that the most important thing that we get from examinations is not whether we have got high scores but whether we know what we have grasped and what we haven t.

“out of my expectation”“stood in amazement”对比了两代人的不同反应。

Mum, I Misunderstood You

My mother is always strict with me, especially after I entered the senior middle school.

After I became a senior student, mum often pressed me to study. After school, as soon as I got home, mum hurried me up to do my homework. Even on weekends, mum wouldn t give me free time. She asked me to take many tutorial classes. I had little time to play. Why couldn t I play?Although I felt very unhappy, I was obedient to mum. After a period of hard work, I made great progress in my study. In the midterm examination, I got the first place in my class. When being told the news. Mum said she was proud of me. Now I am full of confidence in my future. I have understood my mum. She has done all the things for the sake of me. I will work even harder as repayment.

Teacher, We Are Coming

After school, Xiao Gang and Xiao Hong were doing homework when suddenly the rain poured down. Both of them thought of their teacher who was correcting students s papers. What if the teacher was caught in the rain when she went back home?Thinking of this, Xiao Hong opened an umbrella and Xiao Gang pulled on a raincoat. And then they ran towards the school in the heavy rain.

When they arrived at the door of the teacher s office, the teacher was carefully correcting students papers. Hearing footsteps, she stood up. Surprised at seeing Xiao Hong and Xiao Gang, the teacher asked them, “Why do you come here in such a heavy rain?”Xiao Hong and Xiao Gang said together, “We come here to give you an umbrella.”The teacher thanked them, moved, eyes full of tears.

其中用句型:“...be doing...when...”

结尾处用句型:“..., eyes full of tears.”

On the Bus

This afternoon I went to see my grandma by bus. It was very crowded. I had to stand. Beside me was a woman with a little girl in her arms. But in front of her, a young man occupied two seats, pretending to be sleeping. I heard the little girl asking her mother. “What s wrong with the uncle?”I had thought that perhaps the mother would blame the man. But out of my expectation, the woman answered with a smile, “Be quiet. This uncle must be very tired because of hard work.”The young man must have heard these words. His face turned red and he offered one seat to the little girl at once.

The woman respected the young man and didn t blame him in public. In this way, she made him feel ashamed and correct his bad behavior. I think the woman is very smart.

正文部分通过对比:crowded, with a girl in her arms, two seats, pretending to be sleeping 表现了妇女的聪明、善良及年轻人的自私。

My Roommates

There are four members in our dormitory. They are Lao Zhao, Xiao Zhao, Lily and me. We are totally different in many ways, for example, interest, habit, even colour.

Lao zhao is our elder sister. She cares for everybody. If one of us catches a cold, she will take good care of her. So we call her“MOTHER SISTER”. When we are in trouble, we turn to her. Xiao Zhao is a quiet girl. She never speaks too much. Every night when we chat after the light is out, she is always the one who says little but listens quietly. Lily is just the opposite of Xiao Zhao. She is very pleasant and humorous. Where there is Lily, there is laughing. If you see a red dress, throw it on Lily s bed. She is a hot girl.

Such are my three roommates. In spite of the different characters, we get on well with each other. Our dormitory has become our common home.

What a Day

When I was young, my favourite day was the Spring Festival. However, as I grew older, I became more and more interested in a foreign festival—April Fool s Day. Only on that day can I enjoy the happiness of youth and the beauty of life, which is generally flat and dull. On that day, anyone can play a joke on others, relaxing himself or herself completely. And on that day, everyone can laugh as much as they want.

Yesterday was such a day, because it was April 1st —Fool s Day.

That morning, I walked into our classroom as usual, never realizing that it was my favourite day. Suddenly, I noticed my best friend, Li Fei, a lovely girl, made a face at me and cried with surprise just as Christopher Columbus must have done when he discovered the new world. “Oh, My God!Didn t you wash your face this morning? There s some dirt on your face.”Immediately, all the other students stared at me with mysterious expressions. “What?”I was surprised and ashamed. “But I did wash my face. I don t know what it is. Please, please give me your mirror and let me see.”Then the whole class burst into laughter. Li Fei handed me a piece of Paper instead of a mirror, on which were these word:“Today is April 1st. Have a good time, my April fool.”Immediately I was aware that I had been teased.

Instead of looking on it as a joke, I pretended to be very angry and wrote her apiece of paper. “Don t turn around. No one wants to talk with you from now on.”Of course, Li Fei was very upset. After a moment, another piece of paper from her came to me. “I m very sorry. I never thought that this joke would disturb you. I hope you can forgive me.”

With a triumphant smile on my face, I answered her at once:“Have you also forgotten that today is April 1st?Have a good time, too, my fool!”

Then she turned round and we looked at each other and smiled understandingly…

See?That was my favourite day. Don t you think it s interesting?

Honesty is Always the Best Policy

Once, there was an 11yearold girl who was very interested in English. At the time, there were few good English books for children of her age.Every time she went to the bookstore, she always stood in front of the English books, looking for something she liked.

One sunny Sunday, the little girl went to the bookstore as usual. There were so many people there!Suddenly, she saw a book called“Snow White”.And it was a book for middle school students.“Cool!”she said and reached up to take the book. But another hand got there faster:an older girl aged about 16.She smiled at the little girl,as if to say:sorry, but you re late!

The little girl stood there silently for a while, she wanted the book so much! She went to the older girl and said to her:“May I read your book for a minute?Just one minute.”The girl looked at her in surprise for a moment, but smiled and gave her the book. Then she turned around, and went off the look for other books.

The little girl opened the book.Reading those beautiful words, she couldn t help but rush to the exit of the store, pay for the book and run home.

When her friends saw the book, they were all very jealous(羡慕的).But when they read it together, the little girl was absentminded:she kept looking around the room. The question“Am I a thief?”played over and over in her mind. She started carrying the book with her all day.She wanted to return it:only by doing this could she feel at ease(安心).

One day the girl and her friends caught a bus to the park. They had just sat down when she heard a familiar voice:“Grandpa, please sit here!”The girl turned round immediately.“Oh!This is it!”She touched the book in her bag.“But how can I?My friends are all here, what will they say if I return the book?”

She thought quickly and told herself:“No!I must speak to her,I have been looking for her for nearly a month.I must do it!Quickly!”She walked towards the girl and said:“Sorry, sister,I just really wanted the book.”The girl looked at her with great surprise and, finally, she smiled.“Oh,that s the book,”she said.“I m glad to see you again, you are really a nice girl!”The little girl looked into the girl s big eyes as she spoke, and the sweet smile made her feel warm. The older girl took the book and wrote,“Honesty is a priceless treasure(无价之宝)”inside it,and said:“Don t worry, you will be fine!”

You must have realized by now that the little girl was me.And that book is still on my bookshelf. It s a pity that I never found out the older girl s name.Even today, more than five years later, her beautiful smile still appears in my dreams.

Friend in Need

It was raining,but not heavily.

After class,I took a few bottles to go and collect some water from the water room.Oh!There were so many people!I had to wait in the rain.My hair didn t get wet because I wore a hat.But my clothes did.

When at last it was my turn,I filled all the bottles as quickly as possible.I began making my way back to school when I saw a boy coming towards me.He was holding two umbrellas(雨伞).He shouted hello and as he came nearer,I recognized that he was Xiao Bai.

Xiao Bai had been my classmate for nearly three years but we never shared more than ten sentences. He was silent and I liked talking. We were totally different people and had nothing in common.I didn t like him and didn t even want to see him.

“Hey!What s wrong?”His words brought me out of my thoughts.“I saw you standing in the rain so I brought you this umbrella. But it seems a little late, your clothes are already wet.”

On hearing this,I was so moved that I couldn t say a single word.

“Don t just stand there, let s go!”Xiao Bai said and held the umbrella for me.

We walked towards the classroom and this time,we talked a lot.

“I know you don t like me.But I want to make friends with you,”he said.“You may think I m silent, but actually it s because I can t find the right words to say.”This was quite a different Xiao Bai.

The rain finally stopped and we saw a rainbow(彩虹)in the blue sky.I took a deep breath and said to myself:“It is a big mistake to judge someone only by their apperance. And a friend in need is a friend indeed.”

As Tall as the Trees

I used to be an active girl. But two years ago,an English speaking competition held at my middle school changed me a lot.

It is a terrible memory. It was the first time I had stood on a stage and I could feel all eyes in the audience(听众)focused on me.I was trembling and my brain suddenly became empty.

Not long after I began my speech, the hall turned noisy. It seemed that they were laughing at me.I knew I had failed completely.

From then on,I was afraid of stages and crowds and I always stayed alone.I dared not express my ideas in public, even in class.Every time I wanted to say something,I d think people would laugh at me again. My friends couldn t understand me and they left me,one by one.

I lost my confidence and could not concentrate on my studies. As a result,my marks in class became like a snowball slipping down into a valley.

And then came the day.My philosophy(哲学)teacher asked us why trees in forests are much taller than those in the wild.“Ha,what a silly question,”I thought.

“There is not enough space in the woods for trees to expand(伸展) their branches.Of course they have to grow taller than others. The trees in the wild needn t do that since there is enough space,”I murmured(低声说).

To my surprise,the teacher said,“Yes,you re right.It is a competition.”Oh,my God,what a pair of ears!And I blushed(脸红)immediately.It had been such a long time since I was last praised,especially in public.

The teacher then explained how trees in forests have to grow taller than others in order to receive more sunshine;otherwise, they will die. This also happens in our society.

What s more, the trees in the wild are destroyed easily by storms,as they don t live in a crowd. This is just like a person who has no friends in life.

I was deeply shocked by this:“Am I the tree in the wild?”

I raised my head slowly and found the teacher looking at me.His eyes were as warm as sunshine.

At that moment,I realized that I must stand up and face the truth, the challenges(挑战)in my life, and all my friends. Now,thanks to my teacher,I am a very courageous person.

Life is Never Dim

I don t know what other kids feel when told about their parents divorce,or when one of them is to get married again. When I held my parents divorce agreement, that I had accidentally found at the back of the drawer in my hands,I shook all over.I cried really hard not to think about it anymore, although it was just a draft(草稿).

Once on a New Year s Eve I heard mum s screams when everybody outside was celebrating. But,that was not even the end of the story.Something much worse was going to happen to this poor family.

We thought dad was just unwell. No one had realized what the problem was until it was confirmed(证实)he had cancer, when it was too late.

Dad died.

That was four years ago.

For four years mum has been taking care of me alone. For four years she s been bothered(困扰) by debts.During these hard four years, some people helped us,some people looked down upon us,but she took it all.

“Life is never dim(暗淡的)for anyone,”she said to encourage me.And so she worked on,with more white hair and less laughter. She hadn t enjoyed marriage, but life still seemed to be hard.

Every time I saw her working late at night, she reminded me of an old well in the desert that was drying up.“Is that our fate?”I asked myself.“If dad is really up there in the heaven watching us,will he regret what he has done?”

Mum doesn t think so.

She keeps telling me to be strong.“When you first think something is bad, give it a second thought. It turns into the opposite.”

Sometimes I really admire her happy view of life, and she is right. At first I couldn t find a good reason why she put so much pressure on herself.

Gradually,I realized that s the power of love.Love for her daughter, love for the memory of her husband, love for what s good, love for life.

With this power, she overcame so many things;also with this power, she looked on her difficult life with a peaceful smile. She is such a strong woman, and she s my mum.

Storms make trees take deeper roots. Now life is much better for us,what s even more exciting, she has got married again! When I look into her eyes now, something that has been covered with dust for years has come back.

That s what she deserves(应得的).

That s life. You have nothing to lose but everything to gain.

A False Alarm

“Mom and Dad,have a good time,Goodbye!”I waved to my parents, who were going to a dinner at a restaurant.“Look after yourself.Goodbye!”They said.

Now I was alone at home.Realizing they d gone far enough,I could not help jumping high and shouting,“Great! It s my time now!”Sing“A Dream Lover”,I turned on TV,searching all the channels.I found nothing interesting,so I turned it off. Then I walked here and there, thinking of what to do during this precious time.

Just at that moment,I heard a weak knock at the door.“Who s that?”I asked. No answer. Some seconds later,I heard the same sound.Though it was weak,I got a little afraid of it,because it seemed that the sound wasn t made by an ordinary man.Could it be a robber outside the door?I didn t dare to continue thinking, and I stood still, holding my breath.

One,two,three,four...minute by minute passed.Nothing happened. It was silent outside.“Be a man!Even if it is a robber,it must be a timid one.”I encouraged myself.Looking around,I found an empty glass bottle.I held it tightly in my hand an walked step by step quietly to the door.“Hit him on the head and call the neighbours for help,”I said to myself. Then I opened the door with my trembling hand.

There was no robber, even no man. There was only a little cat lying on the stairs.Seeing me,it ran away quickly.Maybe it knew it had done something wrong.

It s All Right to Say “No”

“Let s go to see a movie?”“OK.”

“Would you like another piece of bread?”“Yes.”

“Shall we go fishing?”“Good idea!”

We always hear conversations like these.Sometimes the latter one is in favour of the suggestion and says“Yes”,but sometimes they aren t.They are just afraid of saying“no”to others.

I used to be a girl like that.I dared not say“no”because I didn t want to disappoint others. My teacher would ask me to decorate the classroom for the New Year s party,my classmates would ask me to work out some mathematics problems and my parents would ask me to play the piano. As a result,I was rushed off my feet all the time and I often ran out of steam.Every day I had to work late into the night until I was exhausted(精疲力竭).

It wasn t until I ran into a sentence written by Shakespeare that I understood I was wrong.Shakespeare said,“Above all we should be true to ourselves and then we cannot be false to any man.”Wasn t I dishonest when I did things I didn t like? How could I say I was honest when I didn t care about my true feelings?

“Is saying‘no so difficult?”I asked myself.

Then a story about a manager floated into my mind.

One day the manager was celebrating his daughter s birthday when an important guest arrived without an appointment. His secretary reminded him of the importance of it many times.Still,he didn t hesitate in refusing to meet the guest because of his promise to his daughter. He said“no”firmly.Guess what? The guest spoke highly of the manager because he kept his promise even when his daughter had agreed to let him go.

Suddenly,I understood:I made everybody happy, but what about myself?I was always lying to myself?

From then on,I have never hesitated to say“no”whenever it is needed. But instead of saying it directly,I use a friendly way so as not to hurt people. Now that I dare to say my true feelings,I m happier than ever before and everyone around me is satisfied, too.

So,don t hesitate to say“no”!

Whenever I Go to a Bookstore

There is a famous saying,“Knowledge is a vast ocean.”Therefore,I think, each book is an ocean and bookstore can be compared to a new world that man is exploiting or willing to exploit.Whenever I go to a bookstore,I just regard myself to be an explorer.

Every certain book section is the very part I will search.Once I am in a bookstore,I will choose reference book section for the first stop.If I have questions or difficulty in my studies,I can always get the answers there. If possible,I would buy a very good one without hesitation. Why not? They are all excellent teachers though can t speak.

And then,I will go to the literature section. It seems to be a huge stage on which the authors are putting various wonderful plays. From them I can draw so much.I believe the more you read there, the more mature you would be.

I will go to the economics book section as well.My uncle is a busy businessman. He often tells me to read more about economy or the economic reform that is taking place in our country. He said, only after I knew something about it could I see why our government was doing like this and the future ahead of us.Now I am doing what he told me and his words really work.

In a word,I have a feeling that I am an explorer and an everlasting beneficiary whenever I go to a bookstore. And the feeling will forever be.

A Lesson in Life

Last week, all the teachers and students of our school watched a special performance by some disabled people.

First was a dance named“The Light of Life”.There were three young women who had lost one of their legs and several deafmutes(聋哑人)among the dancers. As they held out their arms to greet the light of life, I could see how they have had to struggle against many difficulties.During the dance I could see how alive their minds were.

The singer came next shocked us all.The singer was very young, but his hands had both been burnt off in a big fire.I dared not look at his wrists too closely. All I could do was listen to his song quietly.

It was called“Late Autumn”and he sang with a low gentle voice.Though in fact it was warm spring,I felt a bit chilled(寒冷的)and sentimental(多愁善感的)to hear the song,as if it was late autumn.“How much love and gloom is hidden in he heart?I want to hold your hand again.”

When I heard this, tears rolled down my face.He had lost not only his hands, but also the chance to hold a girl s hand.I hope he finds a lovely girl one day for company, though he can t hold her hand.

Another young man s arms had been cut off when he was six. From then on,his feet were his“Hands”.He could manage a number of things with his feet.He greatly impressed us with his handwriting. Two big characters?“Flying High”expressed his wish.

“If your wings are broken, your heart can still fly,”said Zhang Haidi,a famous disabled writer.

In our country, there are many people with disabilities. However, most of them don t give in.Their bodies may be damaged but they have wonderful minds.Just as Zhang said, they can fly.

I think of those disabled people who performed for us.They have a disability, but they still gave off a youthful glow.

To be young means to have all kinds of possibilities. We should challenge our limits and go beyond ourselves.

As long as you work hard, miracles(奇迹)will happen sooner or later.I believe, where there is a will, there is a way.

I m Older and Wiser

Today is my 16th birthday.I get up very early and put on my new clothes as quickly as possible.Walking up to the mirror,I look carefully at myself, wondering whether I have become more mature(成熟的).

No.Although I am one year older, what I see is still a childish(幼稚的)face. And I look just as tall as before.I feel very disappointed.I leave the room quickly and go out for a ride on my bike.

I ride very slowly.I feel the wind kissing my face softly.I almost forget the unhappy things.I am on the top of the world! But then I fall down.I am riding so carelessly that I fall off my bicycles. What s worse is that I knock down an old granny who is about to cross the road.

What should I do?All kinds of thoughts rush through my head. With them, there is terrible memory...

When I was younger,I made exactly the same mistake.I knocked down a small girl while riding.I was so frightened that I just rode away, leaving the girl crying in the road.Afterwards,I felt really sorry but what could I do?

Maybe this time I can do something to avoid(避免)being so sorry again.I pull my thoughts back from the past and quickly make a decision.I walk up to the granny and help her up.I take a taxi and send her to the nearest hospital.

The doctor looks over the granny very carefully.Half an hour later,he tells me that there is nothing seriously wrong with her. Finally, there is a smile on my face again.I thank the doctor and help the granny leave the doctor s room.

When we get out of the hospital,I look up at the sky and see that the sun has never looked so beautiful!I also understand that maturity doesn t only mean physical development.By making just one sensible(明智的)decision,I have grown up!

Love

“I love my parents,I love my husband, however now,my dear,I love all of you more deeply.”with these words, she left us.

She was my last head teacher of my junior middle school. As a young lady, she was full of energy.Every morning, she always got up early and waited for us in the classroom. She tried her best to bring us fun and happiness in her class. And every night, she left the classroom late and then went to our dormitory to see if we were noisy. She was just a hardworking bee.

Not only did she work hard, but also she treated us with kindness. In fact, she considered us more her friends than her students.

But some of us,the naughty boys including me,didn t understand her at that time.We were ignorant, and in our minds, she had no teaching experience. What s more,we thought in some way that she was afraid of us.So we slept in her class, pretended to be absentminded, and were late on purpose. We even felt happy for what we had done.

Then in her last class,I still remember,we were sleeping as usual while she was speaking. When the bell rang,I suddenly saw tears rolling in her eyes. She said,“I love my parents,I love my husband, however now,my dear,I love all of you more deeply.”At the very moment,I was moved. How I wanted to say sorry to her.How I wanted her not leaving so soon.

Now,several years have passed, but I still remember the words clearly and want to tell her,“I love you, dear teacher!”

I Can See You Now

It was on February 7,two days before the Spring Festival, that my 90yearold grandfather slipped away, leaving us forever.

My grandpa was a very kind and strongminded man. When I was only a little boy,he was already ill in bed.As a result of cancer and an eye disease,he couldn t go out for a walk,he couldn t talk with his old friends, and he couldn t eat much food!Worse still,he couldn t see!

He had been living in a dark and lonely world for nearly seven years.During that time my parents and relatives were all busy with their own work. Therefore, they couldn t make much time to spend with the old man.Usually they just used to give him some money.I know my grandpa didn t live a happy or comfortable life.Even though he never complained,I sensed his loneliness and helplessness.

Because of his blindness, his memory seemed to remain where it was seven years ago when he was still healthy. At the time,my family was poor and my grandparents had to live a hard life to support the whole family. And I,the naughty boy, often gave them a lot of trouble...Today,everything has changed. My parents earn enough money for us to live comfortably and give him the best medical care. And I have become tall and strong and entered the best high school in my city!Oh,how I wish he could see all of this!

But he has left!Just two days before the Spring Festival,he couldn t sense the joyful air.The whole family sank in the sad atmosphere, which made the Spring Festival seem so far away.

Looking up at the sky,I looked at the fireworks. They were flowers I presented to my dear grandpa!“Be stronger in the new year and show me how excellent you are in the future.I can see you now,my grandson,I will always watch you from heaven!”

My grandfather s gentle and familiar voice came from the dark blue sky and I smiled!

She Cares after All

I used to complain about my English teacher,Mrs Zhou, for her bad English,(in my opinion).I was also fed up with her way of teaching, which was always slow and unfair and I became angry and depressed. Therefore,I seldom listened to her in class.

However,my attitude towards her began to change after one afternoon. It was raining heavily and I didn t go to school. Then after school was over,I received a phone call.“Are you all right?”asked someone in a quiet voice.

Immediately I recognized that it was Mrs Zhou,I became nevous and prepared to be told off(责备)for not going to school.“Yes?”I replied trembling.

She continued:“You see,it was raining cats and dogs.I was afraid that you had had an accident on your way to school.Luckily, you are OK.”

On hearing her words,I was shocked and my mind was flooded with mixed feelings. She was showing her concern for me even though I had not been happy with her! Why?Was she just acting?Or should I make up for the past misunderstanding?

I had never considered how to respect and understand her.I once doubted the answer she gave to a question, and even asked her,“Are you sure?Have you asked other teachers?”I didn t realize that it was really embarrassing for her to be questioned by her student like that.Still she explained to me patiently with a smile.

Also,I believe that I could do well in English even without a good teacher, which inspired me to work like a dog.As I was getting on well with it,I became conceited(自负的).

The more I looked back,the more guilty(内疚的)I felt.She ignored(忽视)my faults,why couldn t I try to accept hers?If a teacher takes care over her work,that is enough.

Now,I am active in class again and I take any chance to practise. It was her tolerance(宽容)that removed all the misunderstandings.

Everyone has his shortcomings, which makes life more difficult. But,tolerance to life is what sugar is to black coffee, turning bitterness into sweetness.

Nobel—a Man of Contrasts

Alfred Nobel, the greatest Swedish inventor and industrialist, was a man of many contrasts. He was the son of a bankrupt, but became a millionaire. He was a scientist with a love of literature, and also an industrialist who managed to remain an idealist. He made a fortune but lived a simple life, and although cheerful in company he was often sad in private.A lover of mankind,he never had a wife or family to love him;a patriotic son of his native land,he died alone on foreign soil.He invented a new explosive to improve the peacetime industries of mining and road building, but saw it used as a weapon of war to kill and injure his fellow men.During his useful life he often felt himself useless;“Alfred Nobel,”He once wrote to himself,“ought to have been put to death by a kind doctor as soon as,with a cry,he entered life.”Worldfamous for his works,he was never personally well known, for throughout his life he avoided public attention.“I do not see,”he once said,“that I have deserved my fame and I have no taste for it.”But since his death, his name has brought fame and glory to others.

A oneleg heroine

Sara Doherty,an American girl, who was knocked down on the ground by a speeding truck and badly wounded many years ago, unfortunately lost her right leg and part of her pelvis.

After she came out of hospital, she began to learn swimming with a strong will.During the next winter, she learned to ski again. She trained hard for a long time and at last became an excellent disabled sportswoman.

In April,1985,as a member of the American Disabled Skiiing Team, she gained the fourth in the International Disabled Skiiing Games. Then immediately after it,she got the fifth in the skiiing contest which was held in Canada.

On May 19,1985,without her fixed false leg,she carried twentyfive pounds climbing tools, and more than twenty days later she overcame all kinds of difficulties. Finally she worked a miracle—she climbed on the top of Mt Mckinley 6 193 metres above sea level, the highest mountain in North America.

Biography of My Grandmother

My grandmother is approximately 64 years old the time I was there. She has the usual Asian visage, such as dark brown eyes, black hair, etc.,but with the warmest smile I ve ever seen. She lives in an apartment with my grandfather near the city, and often takes me to the city to buy something.

I was 9 when I was there.Every morning she would be the first to wake up and prepare breakfast.

She would wear the clothes that she wore every time she went to bed with and do what she normally does. When I finally woke up,breakfast was usually ready and my grandmother would watch me eat with fascination.I often wondered why she wouldn t eat,and whenever I offered her some, she would refuse and say,“You re growing up,you should have more.”(in Chinese of course)Later on I understood why. When I was bored, she would play with me.She would teacher me how to play Chinese chess and play against my grandfather. It was great fun but we generally lost to him.She would also come with mum,dad and I when we go out.Once we went to the museum in Shanghai, she would teach me about the amusing details of each person and I would burst out laughing, which usually turn people s heads.

Whenever she gets angry,I could never tell. She had one of those faces, which you cannot tell if she is angry or happy. The only way I could tell is the way her attitude changes. When she is angry with someone, she would mainly swear at them, blurting out,“What the hell do you think your doing?”or“You stupid,old(young,etc.)person.”Although I still do not understand what she was saying,I could tell by the tone of the voice.

She also speaks what she thinks, meaning whatever comes to her mind, she says.If she thinks someone s opinion is wrong, she would give her own opinion disregarding other people s comments telling her to be quiet, etc.I would look up to her for that feature, because I think it s an indication of high selfesteem, which I think more people should have.

She was very emotional when I was leaving China to return to Australia, she wept because I was going.I had to assure her that I would come back soon. She gave me a big hug and cuddle and said goodbye to me.

Philosophy from Childhood Memory

Even now,I still remember clearly the days spent in the country when I was a little kid. Those are precious memories forever preserved in my mind.

My grandma had a small house but a large yard.Grandma was fond of planting trees. Her life goal was to make the yard woods.I thought she must have been mad to think of that,so I once asked her to give up her ridiculous idea.Instead of accepting my advice, she told me determination was more important than anything else.

The most incredible thing was that she didn t water her trees at all.She said watering them would do no good but harm to them, and trees that aren t watered have to grow deep roots in search of water while watered trees only grow hallow roots.

Grandma died a couple of years after I started my primary school, with her dream not realized. But her theory about planting trees gives me something to think about.

Life is not easy for everyone.Only if we face and solve problems by ourselves can we be independent.

英语把它们叫做when, where, who, what, why和how。
